9. The Flying Deuces (1939). 1-31.

Now, I had decided to make a little calendar just for myself, because I wanted to keep track of something more specific: when I started and how long it took me to read the books. Looking at the dates from last year, it seemed like I'd have two or three books finish in a few days, and I wanted to see if there were any pattern to the books I tended to double up on; a non-fiction and a fluffy book? A really long tome and a quick graphic novel? What actually happened, though, is that I think it's a much cleaner, easier to look at version of new media than these lists, especially for the TV. I was going to just write it out, but it ended up being easier to do it on the computer.

A calendar of January's media.

I can't get into my photobucket. When I try and log-in, it tells me my username or password are incorrect. When I ask for them to email the link to change my password, the site tells me that my email address isn't connected to an account. I've sent two emails to their contact address, and have received no reply and nothing's been fixed. This started on Saturday. I'm going to wait one more day - for a total of three business - and then I will hunt down a phone number, because I pay for that stupid thing, and this is pissing me off.

I am so glad that three years ago, when I was home for my first Christmas break at UT, I decided to check out that Battlestar Galactica show I'd vaguely heard about, even though it was the middle of the second season and I had no idea what was going on. After that first episode, I was like, "Wow, I still don't know what's happening, but that was really good."

I had no idea.

Argh I knew I shouldn't have switched Sally Hawkins for Melissa Leo I KNEW IT, I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO SAG. Also, had picked Michael Shannon in my first go-round, and went with the Slumdog craze.

Yeah, The Reader! I haven't seen it, but how awesome was that? One of my crazy picks made it! I totally gasped when The Dark Knight didn't come up second, because I really thought there was no way that the Academy could ignore it. It made SO MUCH MONEY. What with The Reader getting in for Picture, Daldry for director (!!), and Kate for lead instead of supporting, I would start thinking about The Reader as a dark horse big winner.

Also, Amy Adams had been nominated for the SAG, so I guess it wasn't really going that much out on a limb. I did not count on Kate going lead for The Reader (how's that for standing up to category fraud, Caro?); speaking of which, it's kind of odd to see a film get four acting nominations (Doubt) and not make it into Best Picture.

Brangelina. ♥ ♥ ♥

Disappointed, but not surprised, that Michael Sheen didn't get nominated. AGAIN.

I normally hate Ben Lyons, but before the announcement he said that Robert Downey Jr. would be a surprise even though he's been nominated all season, just because of the character and movie he's coming from, and it's totally true. When he showed up on the screen, in blackface, it was kind of...well, I'll be honest, I totally laughed at the one or two almost offended gasps in the room.

My pre-season Academy Awards nominations post is here, and the actual nominations come out tomorrow, so I'm doing my final predictions. Critics awards, BFCA, Globes, and guilds have shook things up a bit; starred nominees are changes from my original predictions.

And now, my No Guts, No Glory picks. I don't think they'll actually happen, ergo why I'm not picking them above, but there's always a surprise or two. Who knows!? The Reader for Best Picture; Amy Adams for Supporting Actress, and Brad Pitt getting a double nomination with Supporting for Burn After Reading.

It was really exciting today. The sun came out for ten whole minutes.

I did something to my rotator cuff in my left shoulder about two weeks ago. Today was actually a good day, in that I remembered not to lift and do things with my left arm, but that has been the exception. Every day I toy with putting on a sling just so I am not constantly being like, "Oh, I need to grab the heavy gallon of milk from the shelf that's directly level with my shoulder, why don't I use my LEFT ARM for that?" Advil works well, and it's not, like, horrible or anything, but I'd like to get it healed up soon, because I definitely can't go to the doctor over it.

I haven't written in about a month, which isn't too bad, because I'm going back through the draft and doing rewrites, and it's good to have some distance first. It helps me approach what I've written more objectively; I tend, if I look at something right after I write it, to be very happy with it. It's kind of sad, actually. I'm like, "Yeah! That's awesome! It's the best thing ever written in the history of the world!" Which isn't conducive to a polish, obviously. I was going to start back up today, but got cold feet. I'm going to end up having to bribe myself with lunch, sigh.

It's here! January 16th is finally here! You know, I was thinking about it, and I suppose it's perfectly reasonable to have a four-year hiatus between the first half and second half of a season. I mean sure, you'll have people who give up and eventually forget the show is even on anymore, but then you'll also have people who are rabid and insane by the end, and that's good press.

I had tinkered last night with going out today and getting a few fun, snacky things for when we watch, so of course it's ridiculously freezing and we have snow on the ground. Last night we made Nigella's individual Choco Hot-o Pots, which...we probably should have saved for tonight.

To the right are my three favorite BSG icons that I've made. It occurs to me that even though the show is often depressing and grim, there are, occasionally, fun things or joyous things that happen. I should maybe have some icons of those moments, for use in happier times. Because it's like, I'm so excited for the premiere! Look, suicidal people, over there! At least Adama's kinda smiling.

Best Golden Globes ever, Y/Y?

Aaaaand...I'm developing a crush on Patrick Stewart.

Look at how cute!

I like how Caro has relaunched her blog to be all slick and erudite and interesting, and something she can use in a professional context, and mine has remained, "Sometimes I watch TV and there are men I find attractive! See!"

I love movies.

You know what's really hard? The CSI computer game. I DO TOO HAVE ALL THE EVIDENCE, BRASS. SHUT UP.

We had this one random, beautiful day in the low 60s this week, and now we're back to cold. My grandpa keeps saying that since we've had a harsh, cold winter so early, we'll have an early spring, but he said that last year when we had the same weather, and it didn't happen. I swear, it was barely warm even by the time we hit May. I feel like I shake my fist at Canada just about every day.
